FAQs

  • Where is the Blue River Watershed?

Simply put, the Blue River Watershed comprises all of Summit County, Colorado, and a portion of Grand County to the north, and a small portion of Lake County.

  • Why is this important?

We take for granted the potable water that flows from our taps. All of us use water in many ways daily. If we want future generations to enjoy the same luxury, we must work now to protect and sustain the quality and quantity of our water.

  • I am a teacher (or I know one) who wishes to introduce watershed issues to students. What do you suggest?

The Resources section of our website provides links to a wealth of educational information. You can start by introducing your students to the water cycle and discussing local concerns. Also, please feel free to contact us directly. We may be able to help in other ways, like speaking to your class or helping you to understand local issues.

  • What are the priorities of the Blue River Watershed Group?

Our primary focus is to educate the people who live within the basin about watershed issues. We believe that the more you know about water the more comfortable you will feel getting involved in water related issues that face our watershed.

  • How is the Blue River Watershed Group managed?

A volunteer Board of Directors oversees all BRWG activities and prioritizes the programs and issues we address. The executive director manages the group’s day-to-day activities.

  • How is the Blue River Watershed Group funded?

The BRWG is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization funded by member contributions, concerned citizens and grants from state and local entities.

  • What do I need to do if there are wetlands on my property?

If you are conducting activity that may disturb wetlands on property you own, contact the county planning office for assistance at 668-4200, or visit them online.

  • Do I need flood insurance for my house?

Flood insurance is available to anyone and may be a good idea if you are close to river, creek or other drainage way. Your mortgage company may require you to have flood insurance if your property is in a flood zone. For more information contact your local floodplain administrator or visit the FEMA website at http://www.fema.gov.

  • How can I get involved?

You can start by reading more about the watershed on this web site and then attending a local meeting or volunteer activity of BRWG. Upcoming events are posted on our website.

  • I can do that, but what are your real needs?

Funding and outreach. Let us know what you can do! You can help us write grant proposals, create educational materials, network with officials, and reach out to the public in a variety of ways. Or you may want to become a BRWG board member! Please contact us directly and let us know what you’re interest in.
