Free Summit County Water Issues Workshop

Posted Thursday, February 12th, 2009 by BRWG

Join us on February 12, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm for a free water workshop! Please join us at the CMC Breckenridge campus for this informational event.

The Summit County Water Issues Workshop is a two-hour discussion period designed for people who have always heard about the importance of water and want to know more. Presenters will cover local, state and regional water issues in a non-intimidating atmosphere where questions are encouraged.

“Water is such a basic element, but because it is scarce in the Arid West, it can get complex very fast,” said Jim Pokrandt of the Colorado River District. “We hope to help people understand the basic issues because the best defense of Western Colorado water is an educated public.”

The workshop will feature three 10-minute videos commissioned by the Colorado River District as a means of introducing important water topics. The videos cover water supply, water administration and transmountain diversions. Updates will also be given on the Colorado Basin Roundtable and talks involving future water supply solutions for the Front Range and Summit County. Local Water Commissioner Scott Hummer will update attendees on Blue River Basin issues.

The workshop is sponsored by the Blue River Watershed Group and the Colorado River Water Conservation District. Take-home materials will be available to help explain Colorado Water Law and other topical issues.

Blue River Festival

Posted Friday, September 12th, 2008 by BRWG

Eighteen teams of four compete in a three-day fly fishing and golf tournament. Team members will experience some of the most coveted private water and challenging fairways in Colorado.

Proceeds from the Festival benefit the Blue River through restoration and improvements done by the Town of Silverthorne. Since 2003, the Town has been working alongside other organizations and agencies on various projects to sustain the health and vibrancy of the Blue River from the Dillon Reservoir to the Green Mountain Reservoir. Past projects have included constructing fish habitat enhancement structures, expanding public access areas and diligently working to maintain the Lower Blue’s Gold Medal Trout designation.

The Town of Silverthorne is committed to preserving and enhancing the recreational opportunities available on the Blue River, and also protecting water quality and quantity of the Lower Blue River. Your participation in the Blue River Festival makes it all possible!

Parade of No Homes and Friends of Open Space Party

Posted Friday, August 15th, 2008 by BRWG

Please join the Continental Divide Land Trust for the first ever Parade of No Homes on Friday, August 15, followed in the evening by the 6th Annual Friends of Open Space Party.

The Parade of No Homes is a self-driving tour of protected open spaces in the Lower Blue River Valley, from Silverthorne north to Heeney and Green Mountain Reservoir. At stops along the route, artists will be painting in plein air, capturing views of your favorite local landscapes. Art created in the morning will be on display and for sale at the Friends of Open Space Party that evening.
Many acres of ranchlands, scenic views, and wildlife habitat have been protected in the Lower Blue by a variety of conservation techniques. Come learn about these protected lands and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the northern end of Summit County, while watching local and national artists at work. Make a day of it!

The Friends of Open Space Party celebrates land conservation and natural resource protection with booths from local “green” non-profits, food by Hearthstone Catering, and the display and sale of art created that morning. The fun and social evening also includes a silent auction, cash bar, and music by the local band, Ten Mile Divide.

The Parade of No Homes starts between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at the Silverthorne Rec Center. The Friends of Open Space Party starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Silverthorne Pavilion, located at 400 Blue River Parkway.

Future of Water Use and Development in the Lower Blue River

Posted Thursday, June 19th, 2008 by BRWG

Silverthorne Pavilion, Silverthorne

Sponsored by BRWG and FLOBR

Join us on June 19 for a close look at Lower Blue water issues. Friend of Lower Blue River and the Blue River Watershed Group (BRWG) will jointly present this water forum with a focus on the Lower Blue.

Your perspective on Colorado water depends on your location in a watershed. The Lower Blue is in a unique location with respect to many of these water issues. Discussion will include the Lower Blue Pumpback, Wolcott Reservoir, Old Dillon Reservoir enlargement, the Blue River Management Plan, the future of agricultural water, and river / habitat enhancement in the Lower Blue and recent water legislation.

The evening will include an open house with information and displays by entities with an interest in Lower Blue water and a panel discussion focusing our water future in the Lower Blue. Speakers will include Jim Pokrandt, Colorado River District and Scott Hummer, State Water Commissioner.

River enhancement projects in the Lower Blue will be highlighted. Ranchers in the Lower Blue represent a vanguard of fish, waterfowl and river flow enhancement projects. We can all learn more about how to be better stewards of the river and our precious water resources. The future will bring increased pressure on our water resources.

The water quality in the Lower Blue is of the highest quality and has been designated as a gold medal fishery by the Division of Wildlife. Other segments of the Blue River watershed have significantly impaired water quality due to impacts associated with historical hard rock mining, runoff from old mining areas, urban areas, construction and I-70 maintenance activities. The Lower Blue is dependent on reservoir operations that could minimize water quantity and quality.
